Preface

Pediatric urology focused issue

It is with great pleasure that we introduce our special edition on the contemporary pediatric urology issues facing our patients. We have divided this edition into four separate sections: hypospadias, cryptorchidism, varicocele and pediatric potpurri. Each section contains the latest summaries on the contemporary controversies in pediatric urology.

Hypospadias: Here you can find the latest information concerning endocrine disruptors, preoperative hormonal treatment, and the rational for single vs. two stage techniques for severe hypospadias.

Cryptorchidism: Here you will find the evidence (or lack of) for diagnostic imaging in patients with undescended testes. You will also find out what we have learned from testicular biopsy, the latest on the timing of cryptorchidism and the indications for hormonal therapy in patients with undescended testes. You will learn what is new in fertility preservation for boys and adolescents with serious medical problems and finally, the present indications for the placement of testicular prosthesis.

Varicoceles: In this section you will find the latest on treatment indications in adolescents and the implications of varicoceles on testosterone production.

Pediatric potpurri: Our final section highlights the controversies surrounding human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines in teenagers and the use of laparoscopy in children.

Congratulations to all the authors for outstanding contributions!

We hope that you enjoy these excellent articles on the latest controversies in pediatric urology and that this latest information benefits your patients and your practice.
