Focused issue on contemporary management of urethral stricture

It is with great pleasure that we introduce this special compendium on the contemporary management of urethral stricture. We have attempted to present a current, state-of-the-art examination of many new management techniques employed by today’s reconstructive urologists. Manuscripts were authored by both established leaders and rising stars within this growing, vibrant subspecialty.

We begin with a review of imaging modalities utilized to diagnose and stratify patients with urethral strictures. Armed with a detailed portrayal of the picture, we then explore the diverse applications of buccal mucosa grafting in complex urethral reconstruction. Management of the devastated urethra is divided into several important topics, including a new technique for perineal urethrostomy, prevention of urethral stricture after artificial urinary sphincter cuff erosion, and management of refractory incontinence men with refractory stricture.

The acute management of pelvic fracture urethral injuries remains highly controversial. We present the reader with “fair and balanced” arguments supporting both primary endoscopic alignment and delayed bulbomembranous anastomotic urethroplasty using a “Pro” and “Con” approach. Lastly, new frontiers in urethral reconstruction are highlighted, with a focus on alternative grafts and injectable treatments that may be increasingly utilized going forward.

We would like to thank each expert author and the entire Translational Andrology and Urology (TAU) editorial team for their time and hard work in support of this overview.
