Ricardo S. Saban, DVM, PhD

Dr. Ricardo Saban is an Emeritus Professor of Physiology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. He is a graduate of the University of S. Paulo (Brazil) where he received his DVM degree, PhD in Physiology, and a Livre Docent Professor in Pathology. Dr. Saban has two post-doctoral trainings at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Pharmacology 1981-1984) and (Anesthesiology 1986-1988). He has 30 years of teaching experience (Medical School and Graduate School).

Dr. Saban is an internationally recognized expert in bladder inflammation especially with respect to angiogenic, neurogenic, and lymphangiogenic factors in health and disease, including cancer. He has a track record of securing external funds for his research and was also a permanent member of the National Institutes of Health study section, serving the National Institutes of Diabetes and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) study sections.

Dr. Saban collaborated intensively with Promega Corp and had several successful projects funded by Genentech Corp and 3M Pharmaceuticals. He has a track record of securing external funds for his research with the major government agencies: NIH/NIDDK, DOD Peer Reviewed Medical Investigation, and USDA.

Dr. Saban was a Section Editor for BMC Physiological Genomics, a member of the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Physiology – Renal, Associate Editor of BMC Physiology, and several other scientific journals. He also was the Chair and Organizer of International Symposia and Workshops.

Dr. Saban was a permanent member of the National Institutes of Health study section, serving the National Institutes of Diabetes and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) study sections.

Dr. Saban’s publications attest that he is a pioneer in generating animal models of diseases and that his laboratory utilizes cutting-edge molecular techniques such as molecular imaging, suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH), cDNA arrays, and transcriptional factors analyses to identify organ- and disease-specific genes, transcription factors, and regulatory networks.

More recently, Dr. Saban investigated the role of neuropilins and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the physiology of lymphatic vessels and nerves. His research was highlighted in a recent publication by the US Department of Defense.
